NKT

On Sunday I mentioned that there was once a New Kadampa Tradition center in Asheville, on the 2nd floor of a building on Walnut Street. Anyway, about a year after I arrived in Asheville, sometime in 2004, that center (it was called Kosala Buddhist Center) closed in Asheville and the resident monk there moved to Charlotte. Here's the website of the Charlotte center: http://meditationcharlotte.org/

Take a look at the webpage to get some ideas of what an "urban center" is offering in Charlotte.

  1. I should point out that NKT is basically a Gelukpa movement but unlike the majority of Gelukpas, they have broken ties with the Dalai Lama (over the issue of a dharmapala which the DL considers to be dangerous while the NKT folks consider to be buddha!) and for a while, would turn up whenever His Holiness is scheduled to speak to protest with placards and chants against his supposed "intolerance" against the dharmapala. As such, they have been ostracized by mainstream Tibetan Buddhists. Having said that, I truly believe that for the most part, NKT members are simply also trying to be good people - to end suffering for self and others.
